04 Energizing India

This chapter discusses coal, solar and other ways India gets the Energy and uses it. Siddharth
Singh mentions the dependence on coal for meeting with the energy needs and how it has
been adding salt to the injury. He mentions that nuclear energy might be the safest answer to
the biggest question of Energy as the biggest accident that has occurred on an energy generation
plant ever in the history was when a dam of the Banqiao Reservoir in the Henan province of
China breached in August 1975, killing 171,000 people in a single night.
            05 Made in India

The author describes how India's economic & industrial growth and policies have affected the
environment and how since independence the planning has not been done keeping the environmental
concerns in mind. Citing the example of Gurgaon the author takes us through the journey of how
the construction sector has played a significant role in deteriorating the environment.

            06 How India moves

The chapter describes how the automobile and transport sector has evolved over the years at the
expense of the environment. The job generation and economic growth has been at the heart of
the Indian economy which presents a challenge to a strict policy for action against air pollution.

            07 The agricultural Shock

The chapter focuses on the pollution problem caused due to the crop burning problem.
It examines the role of agriculture, particularly crop burning in contributing to air pollution
especially in northern India by discussing the economic and social factors that drive farmers
to resort to crop burning. The book also suggests some potential solutions like in-situ
                   management of crop residue.
            08 The administrative Tournament

The author examines the role of government policies and regulations in addressing air pollution and
discusses the challenges of implementing and enforcing environmental regulations. It analyzes the
interplay between political interests, bureaucratic hurdles, and environmental concerns.
09 How to think about air pollution

The steps needed to be taken to solve the pollution crises
need to be in sync with the economic and political situ-
ation of the country. The various factors involved Dr. Pushpendra
                                                                                  Sunil Kumar
need to be kept in mind and then some concrete Singh
                                                                                Vice Principal
                                                                                     Mahato
steps shall be taken for the same. Controlling the Maharaja Agrasen
sources of pollution, creating technologies for better Model School
and effective management of the waste are some of
the simpler but most important steps.

The Great Smog of India is an essential read for anyone concerned about the environment, public
health, or policy-making in India. Siddharth Singh not only raises alarm about the severe consequences
of inaction but also inspires hope by outlining pathways to cleaner air. It is a wake-up call and a guide-
book for change, a must-read for policymakers, activists, and citizens alike.
